Dry Needling Therapy

Dry needling therapy? Needles and therapy in the same sentence? It sounds intimidating but maybe you’ve heard of it and wondered if it might be a good thing for you to try.

Although the procedure’s name sounds repulsive for rehabilitation, dry needling is a safe and effective therapeutic procedure for a variety of conditions (both musculoskeletal & neuromuscular). The process involves the use of filament needles inserted at a trigger point or muscle with pain. However, the procedure is painless in most circumstances and only recommended for specific conditions under the guidance of your Chiropractor.

Dry needling practice can only be done by certified physicians well trained and skilled in the practice. Dr. Dwayne Ackerman was recently certified in Dry Needling and it is now being offered as a service at Ackerman Chiropractic and Fitness Center.

How Does Dry Needling Therapy Work?

Dry needling only shares needles with acupuncture but it’s not acupuncture- (based on Chinese therapy). It is also grounded in western medicine based on scientific studies of neuroanatomy, neuromuscular and musculoskeletal systems.

A fine, thin, and dry mono-filament needle is inserted through the skin to target trigger points beneath the skin to manage pain and improve movement. So what is a trigger point?

Trigger points are dysfunctional muscle fibers that can hinder range of motion, transmit pain or localized tenderness. The application of dry needling at trigger points (dysfunctional muscle fibers) can reduce tightness (muscle relaxation), improve blood flow and reduce both localized and referred pain in the soft tissue. In addition, a wide range of motion movements can be resumed after decreased pain after the relief.

Conditions Treated

Trigger point dry needling responds well with several conditions that include back, neck, shoulder, and arm pains (like Tennis elbow). In addition, it can also be applied to post-surgical pain, tension pains (inclusive of the neck tensions, spine), leg pain (sciatica, spasms & hamstrings), jaw pains (TMJ), and others under the discretion of Dr. Ackerman.

Dr. Ackerman Chiropractic is certified and skilled to address patients’ pain through dry needling in Indiana.
